Episode 10. Doctoral co-supervision at SLU

In this episode, our colleagues at EPU (the unit of pedagogical development at SLU), Cecilia Almlöv and Henrik Viberg who have wide and rich experience of doctoral supervision in higher education have a conversation about what the meaning of team supervision is and how you can work better in a supervisory team.

They talk about a various range of roles and responsibilities as a member of the supervisory team regardless of whether you are the main supervisor or co-supervisor. They also help us think deeper about many challenges such as emotional support or career planning for doctoral students.

Through this episode, we hope that you can create an opportunity to reflect upon your role as a supervisor.

Episode 9.  Teaching in a distance education degree program before and during the pandemic: Reflections from teacher Charles Melnyk

 

During the Covid pandemic, in-person teaching in the classroom has not been possible to the same extent as before. Thus, there has been an increasing and widespread need to think about quality distance and online teaching in higher education. But what about education programs that were already distance-based? What lessons have been learned during the past two years by teachers and students who were already familiar with distance teaching and learning?

 

In the higher education pedagogy project course, teachers can investigate pedagogical questions of interest. Often, these projects have a broader appeal, such as the report of teacher Charles Melnyk, Associate Senior Lecturer at the Department of Plant Biology at SLU. In his report, Charles explored distance education by studying a long-distance Master's program called Plant Biology for Sustainable Production, which began in the fall of 2018.

 

In this episode, Educational Developer Alexandra D’Urso invited Charles to discuss different considerations and reflections regarding planning for distance teaching, both before and during the pandemic. Using his project course report as inspiration for the conversation, Charles reflects about how a well-designed distance course can enhance students’ education.

[Episode 8] Snabbspår på distans för nyanlända agronomer

I Sverige är det brist på erfarna agronomer, och därför startade Arbetsförmedlingen i samarbete med SLU ett projekt där utlandsfödda akademiker erbjöds en svensk påbyggnad av sin utbildning – ett så kallat snabbspår. Snabbspåret genomfördes helt på distans med ämnesexperter från SLU i Uppsala och Alnarp och distanspedagogiskt upplägg från SLU i Skara. Målet var att att öka chanserna för deltagarna att få jobb i Sverige inom sitt yrkesområde.

 

I det här avsnittet har den pedagogiska utvecklaren Alexandra D’Urso från Enheten för pedagogisk utveckling på SLU ett samtal med två av deltagarna i snabbspåret, Ivana Stijepic och Nour Al Hariri och en av lärarna, Maria Lingaas.

I det här avsnittet har de pedagogiska utvecklarna Peter Aspengren och Alexandra D’Urso från Enheten för pedagogisk utveckling på SLU ett samtal om undervisning i digitala och fysiska miljöer där de delar med sig av sina erfarenheter, lärdomar och tankar kring e-lärande.

 

De pratar även om vad som har varit mest givande under personalutbildningskursen ”Tillämpat aktivt e-lärande”. I samband med detta nämns begrepp såsom kollegialt lärande, digital utanförskap, hybrid undervisning i digitala miljöer samt hur olika digitala verktyg har funkat i lärarnas undervisning hittills. Peter och Alexandra lyfter även blicken till den pedagogiska framtiden som kanske redan är här.

[Episode 6.] Interdisciplinary master programs: utilizing breadth in student recruitment.

At SLU and many other universities, new interdisciplinary master's programs are established. Many of the problems our societies are facing are complex and involve a broad range of knowledge areas. Thus, there is a need for interdisciplinary competence and we have to develop the ability to cooperate and understand each other across disciplinary boundaries.

In this episode, Jan Stockfors talk to Camilo Calderon about Camilo’s work with the master program Environmental communication and management here at SLU.  This program has an interdisciplinary character and students are recruited from a broad range of backgrounds regarding disciplines as well as geographically and culturally. Camilo shows us how essential the variation of experiences the students bring is for the learning of the program. This broad student recruitment also brings some challenges and in the episode, Camilo also shares his experience of how these challenges can be turned into learning experiences.

 In this episode, Assistant Professor Melanie Miller Foster and Educational Developer Natalie Jellinek discuss teaching and learning in higher education in relation to internationalization, global learning, and the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. 

 

Episode 2 explores how teachers can promote intercultural communication and support the development of global competencies in higher education. Melanie and Natalie discuss the importance of being engaged with this kind of teaching and learning and share some strategies about how to work within universities and communities to support global learning.

In Part 1, common understandings and uses of the terms internationalization and global learning are discussed, followed by a discussion of what working this way can look like in different contexts. Natalie and Melanie discuss the GCUA (Global Challenges University Alliance) and how SLU and Penn State University are developing Ph.D. training that aims to achieve the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

[Episode 4.] Writing across the curriculum

In this episode, we will talk about writing in higher education and more specifically writing across the curriculum.

Many students struggle with writing assignments during their time at university. University teachers often turn to educational developers in search of methods and ideas to help the students to develop in their writing. One way of helping teachers in tertiary education to reflect upon and work with the students on writing in the programs is to implement writing across the curriculum approach. 

In this talk, educational developers Alexandra D’Urso and Linn Areskoug will discuss a variety of entry points into implementing a writing across the curriculum approach into teaching in higher education. Alexandra and Linn will discuss overarching perspectives on teaching on learning at university in regards to writing, as well as share lessons learned from experiences at higher education institutions and writing project sites such as the Bay Area Writing Project at the University of California at Berkeley and Mount Holyoke College.
